Botanical painting workshop: Summer perennials

Sandrine is a botanical artist and author who exhibits her work internationally and has published two books on botanical watercolours. Let Exbury Gardens inspire you and be your palette for a day of glorious summer perennials. 
 

Botanical painting - Sandrine Maugy

 

Refreshments will be provided in the morning and afternoon. Bring a packed lunch or there are a range of food options available to purchase from Mr. Eddy’s Restaurant and VGF’s outlet.
 
This is a small group workshop where Sandrine will demonstrate each stage and the key techniques, with time to ask questions and scope for some 1:1 support.
 
Materials to bring:
  • Watercolour paper; minimum 300 gms (140 lbs), stretched or in a glued block format. Texture: Hot pressed, Cold pressed or NOT. Un-stretched paper of more than 400gms is even better. My recommendation:  Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed Extra White 640gns or Fabriano Watercolour paper block 
  • Watercolour paints. Bring along any colours you have (artists’  quality) and I will give more advice on colour during the sessions.  My recommendation: Daniel Smith Watercolours or basic set of 12  pans 
  • Any size brush, as long as it has a good point. I recommend  synthetics and I usually work with size 6, 2, 0 and 3/0. Recommendation: Pro Arte Prolene + Series 007 
  • Usual drawing equipment: pencil, rubber, putty rubber etc  My pencil recommendation: Uni Kuru-Toga mechanical pencil  0.5mm 
  • Tracing paper. Recommendation: Daler-Rowney tracing pad 
  • Wax-free transfer paper if available, but not essential. Recommendation: Jackson’s wax free transfer paper 
  • Cartridge paper or sketchbook. Cartridge paper recommendation: Fabriano Accademia 
  • Any usual equipment such as water-pot, drawing board, cotton cloths.
