Jim brings Exbury's story to life5th March 10
Visitors to Exbury Gardens get more than their money’s worth when they take a buggy ride with Jim Langford.
Jim, 83, has worked for the Rothschild family at Exbury for more than 60 years, helping to run the two farms and the dairies which were once part of the estate, working with the game shoot and giving a hand in the Gardens when needed.

A fabulous Fortune rhododendron was one of the prizewinning blooms that helped Exbury Gardens sweep the board at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Spring Show in London on Tues 1 April. The enormous bloom was a favourite of the Garden’s guiding spirit, Edmund de Rothschild – ‘Mr Eddy’ – who died at the age of 93 in January this year.

Visitors to Exbury Gardens which open for the season on Saturday (March 7) will have a rare chance to see a giant magnolia coming into full bloom. Exbury’s enormous Magnolia campbellii, about 90ft (30m) tall, and at least 50 years old, normally flowers before the season starts. But the hard winter has held back the buds and, for the next few weeks, its huge pink goblets will fill the sky above other trees.
