Magnolias - Summer

Magnolias continue to provide colour throughout the garden well into the autumn. One of the best is the largest leaved Magnolia macrophylla with pure white scented flowers eighteen inches wide and leaves in a good year up to four feet in length. Another Magnolia worth seeing is the upside flowering species of Magnolia wilsonii  and Magnolia sieboldii ssp. sinensis. These Chinese species flower during June with white pendulous flowers providing rich scent and colour. By August and September the evergreen Magnolia grandiflora from the southern states of America comes into flower, it’s large, leathery shiny leaves contrasting well with it’s twelve inch, pure white scented flowers.
