Magnolias - Spring
Magnolias are regarded as the aristocrats of the woodland garden. They provide a rich and varied display of colourful flowers. In early spring it’s the Asiatic Magnolias that brings a wealth of colour with Magnolia campbellii from the Himalayas, Magnolia stellata, M. salicifolia from Japan and M. kobus from Japan & Korea providing delicate scented blooms. There are some excellent named varieties to look out for including. Magnolia x loebneri ‘ Leonard Messel’ and the Gresham Hybrids from California of Magnolia ‘Heaven Scent’ and the New Zealand Jury Hybrids of Magnolia ‘Apollo’. There are several good yellow flowering magnolias in the collection including Magnolia ‘Butterflies’.
