The glade
The Glade stretches down from the neo-Palladian house that Lionel built around a smaller 18th Century house. It is flanked by great cedars, planted in 18th Century by William Mitford, and a number of hardy hybrid rhododendrons such as ‘R. Loderii King George’ from Leonardslee & ‘R. Birthday Girl’ , an Exbury hybrid bred by Edmund de Rothschild and dedicated to the Queen Mother on her 80th birthday. The Lionel de Rothschild memorial can be found at the far end of the Glade.
