Founded by Mayer Amschel, the Rothschild houses spread throughout Europe when his five sons settled in its financial centres: Frankfurt, Vienna, London, Naples and Paris. In 1822 the brothers were created Barons by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. They are represented by the five arrows on the family’s coat of arms, which centres on a red shield. The name derives from the German for red (i.e.rotes Schild) which hung outside the Frankfurt home of Mayer Amschel.
